We had another busy and productive week in fifth grade; including Picture Day, a Fire Drill, a wonderful Cultural Arts Assembly, and the final creation of our Class Charter (see below)!
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK💡
MATH:
Last week in math we began Chapter 2: Fractions and Mixed Numbers. Students examined fractions and mixed numbers as division expressions. We also learned how to add fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.
READING WORKSHOP:
Our mini-lessons last week focused on a variety of fiction comprehension skills, and continued practice with stopping and jotting to deepen our understanding of the text. Students also examined the power of conversations. We learned that readers come together to have conversations in order to both share thinking, and grow ideas together. Finally, we practiced collecting evidence of the author's purpose during our guided reading groups.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our writing focus last week shifted from creators to editors as we examined the writing process. Students began by selecting a draft from their writing notebook to use for publication. After selecting drafts, we spent the remainder of the week revising our work. Students looked for places in their writing that were confusing or needed to be deleted., revised for overused words, and created strong opening sentences. Additionally, students met with writing partners to collect peer feedback.
SCIENCE:
We began wrapping up our Earth in Space unit last week with two super fun culminating activities. First, students studied various constellation patterns and illustrated and retold each story for our class. Next, we continued our examination of the planets and constellations by using the app Sky View. Students put to test their knowledge of "objects" in the sky, and participated in a scavenger hunt to learn more about planets and stars.
