It's hard to believe that Halloween is next week already!! Time is flying by-and our class is having LOTS of fun!! Please enjoy the above picture of our class enjoying each other's writing at our first Gallery Walk of the year! ✏️📓
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK💡
MATH:
Last week in math we continued to practice adding fractions with unlike denominators. Students also learned how to subtract fractions and mixed numbers, with and without renaming. Additionally, students are strengthening their factorization skills while learning how to simplify fractions!!
READING WORKSHOP:
We wrapped up our read aloud study of Towers Falling, and examined main idea and theme. Students explored common themes in fiction and used evidence from the text to support their claims. On Friday, our readers completed their first constructed response of the year!
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our writers were super busy last week finishing the remaining edits on their final drafts. Through both peer and teacher conferences, students worked hard proofreading for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. They created beautiful book covers and shared their creative work with the class at our first Gallery Walk of the year!
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Our Colonization Unit officially began last week as we began to focus on the essential question of the unit: How were the three colonial regions alike and different?
Students divided into groups based on the six featured colonies in our Social Studies Alive text. Each colonial group examined the following topics regarding their colony: who settled it, geography/landforms, economy, and type of government. Upon completion of their research, students created a Canva billboard for their colony and will try to persuade other students to settle in their colony later this week!
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS 📌
MATH:
We will finish up Chapter 2 this week! Students will practice solving real world fraction problems and review the major concepts from the chapter. Our final assessment will be on Thursday.
READING WORKSHOP:
This week in reading we will put into action all of the fiction comprehension skills we've been practicing so far this year! Our class will begin a whole class novel study, using the text Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We will begin our third writing unit of the year, Personal Narratives. This week students will explore personal narrative writing and focus their work on special objects, interesting events, and sensory details.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We will wrap up our study of the colonies this week with our billboard presentations, and a whole class examination of the similarities and differences between the colonial regions.
UPCOMING EVENTS 📆
Thursday, 10/24: Chapter 2 Math Test (Anderle)
