We had another busy and productive week in fifth grade, including Picture Day, a Fire Drill, a full day with our D214 student (Mika), and Ability Awareness Stations on Friday!!
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK💡
MATH:
Last week in math we began Chapter 2: Fractions and Mixed Numbers. Students examined fractions and mixed numbers as division expressions. We also learned how to add fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.
READING WORKSHOP:
Our mini-lessons last week focused on a variety of fiction comprehension skills. Students practiced activating schema to gain a deeper understanding of texts, and identified story elements to further comprehension. We also examined the power of conversations. Students learned that readers come together to have conversations in order to both share thinking, and grow ideas together. Finally, we utilized a summarizing framework and organizer to improve our summarization skills.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our writers were super busy last week! As we began to move through the writing process, students spent time analyzing and revising their drafts. We revised our writing for overused words and created strong opening sentences. Students also peer conferred with their writing partners, and proofread for correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Our Colonization Unit officially began last week as we began to focus on the essential question of the unit: How were the three colonial regions alike and different?
Students divided into groups based on the six featured colonies in our Social Studies Alive text. Beginning this week, each colonial group will examine the following topics regarding their colony: who settled it, geography/landforms, economy, and type of government. Upon completion of their research, students will create a billboard for their colony and try to persuade other students to settle in their colony.
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS📌
MATH:
We will continue moving through Chapter 2. Students will learn how to subtract fractions and mixed numbers.
READING WORKSHOP:
This week's mini-lesson topics will include character analysis, point of view, and making plans as readers.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We cannot wait to share our first publications with one another this week during our Gallery Walk!
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Students will begin working in their colonial research groups!
