Last full week of October....Halloween next week...how can this be? The days are flying by in fifth grade! This week is jam packed with only 3 instructional days, but I am looking forward to meeting with each of you during conferences!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
In math last week we began Chapter 3, Fractions and Mixed Numbers. Students practiced adding and subtracting unlike fractions, as well as simplifying fractions.

READING WORKSHOP:
We were super busy last week during our workshop! Students learned that readers of fiction pay attention to story elements to monitor understanding and help build the world of the story. We also explored point of view by examining how the narrator's perspective influences the way the events of a story are told. Finally, students continued to practice finding the theme of fiction texts.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Last week we began our third writing unit of the year, Personal Narratives.. Students examined how storytellers share personal events and experiences from their own lives in their work. We used this model to tap into our personal experiences by thinking about special objects and events. Students also created a Heart Map to use for future writing ideas.

SOCIAL SCIENCE:
We wrapped up our American Revolution unit last week by officially choosing a side in the war. Students selected their side and drafted an essay using specific evidence from the unit to defend their decision. We're looking forward to hearing everyone's declaration this week!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
We will continue to practice subtracting fractions, and also examine fractions as division expressions.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our Fiction study will continue this week. Mini-lesson topics will include: documenting how characters undergo change and types of conflict in fiction.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We will continue to explore personal narratives this week.

SOCIAL SCIENCE:
Students will share claims and defend choices of which side of the war he or she chose!

Happy October! Fifth grade continues to be busy and exciting! Last week we had our first Shillings Auction and our Battle of Bunker Hill Reenactment!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
Last week in math we finished up Chapter 2. Students continued to practice using the order of operations to evaluate equations. We also practiced solving real world multiplication and division problems.

READING WORKSHOP:
We were super busy readers last week! First, students developed a criteria to use for creating classroom book talks, and began planning for their own upcoming talks. Next, we took an in depth look at our reading log data to reflect on reading practices. We used this data to make decisions about our own stamina, pacing, and habits. Finally, students reflected on their reading lives, and set goals based on their reading habits, choices, understanding of text, and participation in conversations. Although these tasks can be difficult to tackle, our class did a great job of accepting the challenge!

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our writers were also super busy last week! As we began to move through the writing process, students spent time analyzing and revising their drafts. We revised our writing for overused words and created strong opening sentences. We also met with our writing partners at the beginning and end of the week to share our revisions.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Last week's American Revolution study focused on the Battle of Bunker Hill. Students learned the history behind this important battle and its impact on the Continental soldiers, and the war itself. Special thanks to Mr. Burke, who shared his videos from the the actual Battle of Bunker Hill memorial site in Boston. Our class loved seeing this history through your eyes (and voice)!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
We will finish up Chapter 2 this week, with our final assessment on Tuesday. We will also begin Chapter 3, Fractions and Mixed Numbers.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our next reading unit, Fiction, will begin this week! Students will compare the main idea and themes of our recent fiction texts: Towers Falling and Among the Hidden. We will also focus on comparing the structures of fiction texts and analyze characters.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Students will proofread their final drafts and publish their work. We will hold a Gallery Walk on Friday to share our published pieces!

SOCIAL SCIENCE:
The American Revolution will continue this week as we examine the battles fought in the war and the Americans push for independence.
