It’s hard to believe that we have almost reached the end of the school year. This will be the final installment of The Anderle’s Adventures for the 2015-2016 School Year! It has truly been a privilege and honor working with your children!!! Watching them grow into almost middle schoolers has been an amazing ride; one I feel so lucky to be a part of. Thank you for all you've done to support your child's journey here at Patton School! I'm looking forward to celebrating our remaining milestones together over these last few weeks!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
We continued moving through Unit 9 last week in math. Students practiced finding the volume of prisms, and solved four 4's problems. On Friday, we reviewed many of our major concepts from Unit 9 with a math class BREAKOUT! It was a tough, challenging Breakout, but with lots of teamwork and communication, students were eventually able to breakout!

READING WORKSHOP:
Our Tuck Everlasting literature circles continued last week! It is wonderful watching our class work together in groups to plan out their learning for the week. Together they decide on the number of chapters to read, and assign literature roles for their discussions. They are definitely enjoying their independence and proving just how well they can facilitate their own learning!

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We're finally celebrating our published work as short fiction authors! Last week we began sharing our stories! What an amazingly talented group of writers we have here in 5-1!

PERSONALIZED LEARNING:
The 15-Day Challenge is up and running, and we've successfully completed our first 5 days! Last week students set goals and created a weekly plan. We documented progress and reflected daily, and had an opportunity to get peer feedback on Friday! Students set goals for our next 5 days, and are eager to continue this week!

SCIENCE...or PLAY PRACTICE:
As I'm sure you've heard, our play practices are in full swing! Unfortunately, our science time last week was the only time available for the entire fifth grade to get together and practice in the commons. We're all excited to get back to our Ecosystems unit this week!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
Unit 9 will wrap up later this week. We will review the major concepts from the unit and take our final test on Friday.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our Tuck Everlasting literature circles will continue this week!

PERSONALIZED LEARNING:
Our 15-Day Challenge will continue this week as we move on to days 5-10! Students will continue to set goals, research, document, reflect, and give/receive peer feedback.

SCIENCE:
Ecosystems will continue this week as we examine food chains and food webs. We will also further explore the idea of developing a compost program for Patton School.

I hope you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day yesterday! We have a great and busy week ahead in fifth grade. Don't forget to join Patton at our Garibaldi’s night on Thursday from 5-8pm!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
Last week in math we continued moving through Unit 9. Students used the formulas for area of a rectangle, triangle, and parallelogram to solve area problems. We also learned how to find the volume of rectangular prisms.

READING:
Our first full week of Tuck Everlasting literature circles was amazing! I have loved watching our class work together in groups to plan out their learning for the week. Together they decide on the number of chapters to read, and assign literature roles for their discussions: Discussion Director, Illustrator, Summarizer, Connector, and Passage Master. They are definitely enjoying their independence and proving just how well they can facilitate their own learning!

PERSONALIZED LEARNING:
We successfully kicked off our 15 Challenge last week! Students were introduced to this idea through a Ted Talk (the 30 Day Challenge):

https://www.ted.com/talks/matt_cutts_try_something_new_for_30_days?language=en

Students accepted the challenge of learning something new in just 15 days, and then began brainstorming ideas. After selecting their challenge, students formulated their topic into a question to guide their learning.

Example:
In what ways might I compile a gallery of photos that I have taken?

Next, students set goals and established a plan for the first 5 days of the challenge. After completing our official Day 1, students documented and reflected on their progress. Beginning this week, we will be using Seesaw as our online journaling tool for this documentation.

SCIENCE:

We officially began our Science Companion study of Ecosystems last week! Students observed the living and non-living components of ecosystems, and then identified interactions between these components. We discussed the definition of ecosystems, and then explored our school ground to search for and document examples of different interactions within this ecosystem. Next, we discussed the survival needs of animals and considered the link between energy and matter, and the survival needs of living things. Through analysis and interpretation of nutrition labels, students discovered ways that food provides the matter (nutrients) and energy that all animals need to survive.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
This week in math we will finish up most of the lessons in Unit 9. Students will solve 4 4's problems and examine volume. We will also participate in a Unit 9 review Breakout...designed by me! :)))

READING WORKSHOP:
Literature circles will continue this week, along with an examination of our Ecosystems Schoolwide unit.

PERSONALIZED LEARNING:
Our 15 Day Challenge will continue this week! Students will complete their first 5 days, and set new goals and plans for the next 5 days.

SCIENCE:

Our study of Ecosystems this week will involve an examination of food chains, food webs, and plants as producers.
