I hope you all had a wonderful Mother's Day yesterday! It’s hard to believe that we have almost reached the end of the school year. This will be the final installment of The Anderle’s Adventures for the 2016-2017 School Year! It has truly been a privilege and honor working with your children!!! Watching them grow into almost middle schoolers has been an amazing experience; one I feel so lucky to be a part of. Thank you for all you've done to support your child's journey here at Patton School! I'm looking forward to celebrating our remaining milestones together over these last few weeks!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
We continued moving through Unit 9 last week in math. Students practiced finding the volume of prisms, and solved four 4's problems. We also examined surface area and the relationship between volume and capacity.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our literature discussion groups continued last week! It is wonderful watching our class work together in groups and put all of their literacy skills into practice. Their note-taking and response to literature skills have strengthened so much over the year! They are definitely enjoying their independence and proving just how well they can facilitate their own learning!

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We've been putting the final touches on our short fiction stories and our writers can't wait to share their work with the class! We're crossing our fingers that our sharing celebration will take place later this week!

PERSONALIZED LEARNING:
The 15-Day Challenge is up and running, and we've successfully completed our first 3 days! Last week students set goals, created a weekly plan, documented progress, and reflected daily.

SCIENCE:
It's time for our study of Ecosystems in our classroom! Last week, students began a partner research project focusing on one particular ecosystem. Together, they explored ecosystem vocabulary concepts. This week they will be examining organisms, food chains, and food webs specific to their ecosystem!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
Unit 9 will wrap up later this week. We will review the major concepts from the unit, participate in a Breakout, and take our final test on Thursday.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our literature groups will continue this week!

PERSONALIZED LEARNING:
Our 15-Day Challenge will continue this week as we move on to days 4-8! Students will continue to set goals, research, document, reflect, and give/receive peer feedback.

Happy Monday! We have a busy and exciting week ahead in fifth grade. Don't forget to join Patton at our Garibaldi’s night on Thursday from 4:30-8pm!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
Last week in math we began Unit 9: Coordinates, Area, Volume, and Capacity. Students examined ordered number pairs, and practiced plotting points on coordinate grids. We also explored area, and learned how to find the area of rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms.

READING:
Our poetry unit came to an end after we learned how to clear up confusion and put all of our ideas together. We spent the remainder of the week choosing novels for our final unit of the year, self-selected literature circle groups. Mrs. Melamed book-talked several novels from a variety of genres. Students then had the opportunity to choose a book that interested them. Next, we formed groups based on book choices and began collaborating. I loved watching our class work together in these lit groups to plan out their learning for the upcoming weeks. Together they decided on the number of pages to read each week, and assigned dates for literature discussions. During each reading session, students will be using the Notice & Note signposts to respond to their reading. They will also identify important and/or unfamiliar vocabulary, and create their own discussion questions. They are definitely enjoying their independence and proving just how well they can facilitate their own learning!

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Last week during WEX, students moved through the writing process; revising, editing, and publishing their short fiction stories. We met with writing partners to give/receive feedback and made revisions accordingly. Students are just about finished with their stories, and we're looking forward to share our work later this week!

SOCIAL SCIENCE:
Two of our wagon trains successfully made it to Oregon via the "Hacker Trail!" It was a close race, but only Xander, Megan, Madde, Gino, Lily and Abby, Joey, Ava G., Hannah, and Peter survived! Congratulations to our brave pioneers!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
