Happy last week of February! The weeks are just flying by! As a reminder, please send in headphones for your child if you haven't already done so. :)

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
Last week in math we began Unit 7, Exponents and Negative Numbers. Students examined exponential notation, standard notation, and expanded notation. We also practiced using the powers of 10, along with scientific notation.

READING WORKSHOP:
Last week during literacy we began our novel study of Holes. Students were instantly intrigued by the characters in this book and excitement grew throughout the week! We will focus on many different aspects of "good reading" with this novel, which will ultimately prepare students for a successful experience in conducting literature circles. We used our time last week to review reading strategies and the Notice & Note signposts. Students practiced questioning (we developed three essential questions to drive our study of Holes), which included responded to and creating different levels of questions. Through several "Think Alouds" students practiced taking notes and finding evidence (even this early on) to answer our essential questions. Finally, we logged the signposts that we discovered and determined how they help us understand the characters and theme.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:

Our Writers’ Workshop time was spent on our new writing project, The Harris Burdick Mysteries. Students selected a mystery picture and caption (based on The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris VanAllsburg) and practiced observing and inferring as they developed a hypothesis for their mystery. We then began composing our mystery stories; focusing on character, setting, and plot development.

SCIENCE:
Earth in Space continued last week as students explored our sun as a star! Students were introduced to the idea that the apparent brightness of the sun and stars is due to their relative distance from Earth. We also enjoyed reading about many different types of stars.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
This week in math we will continue moving through Unit 7. Students will practice using parentheses and the order of operations. We will also compare and order numbers.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our novel study of Holes will continue this week with a focus on social interactions and preparing for discussions.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We will continue drafting our Harris Burdick Mysteries.

SCIENCE:
Our study of Earth in Space will conclude this week. Students will learn about seeing stars from Earth, along with star patterns.

Wow, where has the month of February gone???!!! The days and weeks are flying by! Pitchers and catchers reported, our Little Mermaid auditions began, and we even got a break from our typical winter temps! Only a few more weeks until spring! (27 more wake-ups!)

Please remember to send in headphones for your child in preparation for our upcoming PARCC Tests. Thank you!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
In math last week we finished up Unit 6. Students learned how to subtract fractions and mixed numbers, and reviewed the major concepts from the unit. Our final test is today! Good luck, 5-1!

READING WORKSHOP:
Our literacy time last week focused on the nonfiction text, Freedom Walkers. Throughout the week, students examined new vocabulary terms and practiced using various comprehension strategies to better understand this complex text. As we continued to explore this story behind the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, students practiced questioning as they learned about the many boycott heroes. We also made text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections as we examined the reasons why so many boycott supporters we "proud to be arrested." In addition, students used context clues to understand complex vocabulary and practiced summarizing the main idea using supporting details.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:

We began our Response to Fiction essays last week during WEX. Students chose a character and character trait to focus on, and then wrote about two moments in which this character demonstrates the chosen trait. We also created lead sentences and introduction paragraphs. In addition, students met with writing partners to elicit feedback, and used our class-created rubric to self-assess.

SCIENCE:
Our study of Earth in Space continued last week. Students worked in small groups to finish designing their "shadows" videos. We are all eager to share these creations this week!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
We will begin Unit 7, Exponents and Negative Numbers, this week! Students will examine exponential notation, powers of 10, and scientific notation.

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
Last week in math we continued moving through Unit 6, Organizing Data and Adding/Subtracting Fractions. Students reviewed equivalent fractions and least common multiples. We also learned how to find lowest common denominators to add fractions with unlike denominators. Students practiced adding fractions and mixed numbers!

READING WORKSHOP:
Our literacy time last week focused on the nonfiction text, Freedom Walkers. Throughout the week, students examined new vocabulary terms and practiced using various comprehension strategies to better understand this complex text. Happy February! We're ready for another busy week in fifth grade! A special THANK YOU to Mrs. Ernst for coming into our class last week to teach us about adaptations for disabled students!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
Last week in math we began Unit 6: Using Data and Adding/Subtracting Fractions. Students learned how to create line plots and stem-and-leaf plots for data sets. We used our graphs to find the landmarks for each data set, and analyzed and drew conclusions about the results.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our literacy time last week focused on the nonfiction text, Freedom Walkers. Throughout the week, students examined new vocabulary terms and practiced using various comprehension strategies to better understand this complex text. As we explored this story behind the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, students learned about the lives of Jo Ann Robinson and Claudette Colvin. We practiced visualizing as we compared life in the 1950s to life today. Students also examined photographs and captions to further understand how the author retells this story throughout the book.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Response to Fiction continued last week. Students wrote about what dialogue and narration show, and practiced telling and showing with direct quotes. We also identified textual evidence that shows character traits, and made connections between two moments based on traits.

SCIENCE:
Our Earth in Space unit continued last week as week explored patterns of the sun. Students explained the concept of day and night through an examination of rotation and revolution. We also used observations to explain how a shadow's shape, direction, and movement are related to the sun's position and to the path it travels across the sky.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
Most of our math time this week will be spent taking our COgat tests. However, we will squeeze in a lesson or two on adding fractions with different denominators.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our study of Freedom Walkers will continue this week. Students will examine the lives of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the many other boycott heroes.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We will complete our final Response to Fiction lessons before beginning our formal essay. This week students will learn the rules for verb tense and will practice adding evidence by quoting dialogue from the text.

SCIENCE:
Earth in Space will continue this week! Students will focus on observing the sun and tracking shadows.
