Happy (almost) Valentine's Day! We're all super excited to celebrate tomorrow. Just a reminder about our upcoming PARCC Testing....fifth graders are required to have headphones for the ELA Tests. Please be sure to send your child's in as soon as possible (if you haven't already). Thank you!
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
Last week in math we continued moving through Unit 6, Organizing Data and Adding/Subtracting Fractions. Students reviewed equivalent fractions and least common multiples. We also learned how to find lowest common denominators to add fractions with unlike denominators. Students practiced adding fractions and mixed numbers!
READING WORKSHOP:
Our literacy time last week focused on the nonfiction text, Freedom Walkers. Throughout the week, students examined new vocabulary terms and practiced using various comprehension strategies to better understand this complex text. As we continued to explore this story behind the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, students compared and contrasted the lives and experiences of JoAnn Robinson, Claudette Colvin, and Rosa Parks. We also determined important details as we examined the influence of Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition, students practiced questioning as they learned about the many boycott heroes.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
WEX for the week focused on adding evidence, and quoting directly from the text. Students learned the rules for verb tense and practiced quoting dialogue correctly. We also began brainstorming ideas for our Response to Fiction essays.
SCIENCE:
Earth in Space continued last week as we focused on the sun and shadows. Students worked in groups to create videos explaining how shadows are formed, when shadows are formed, and conclusions we can draw based on the sun and shadows.
