Wow, it’s hard to believe that our final week of September is here! We’re busy as ever in fifth grade, moving through our units and of course having lots of fun doing so!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:

In math last week, we continued our work with estimation and computation. Students reviewed addition and subtraction of whole and decimal numbers, examined the components of open number sentences, and solved addition and subtraction number stories. We also conducted two experiments to collect and analyze data. Our first experiment focused on our reaction times and finding the landmarks for our data set. Our second experiment focused on probability and chance events. Students recorded results for the number of times pushpins landed face down.

READING WORKSHOP:
Literacy last week focused on our first five mini-lessons from the Schoolwide program: studying ourselves as readers. Students learned that readers need to have an understanding of their pace and stamina when reading in order to develop a clearer sense of themselves as readers, and began a reading log to track the time and amount read each day. Students also learned that readers have both short-term and long-term plans for their reading lives. We created "bookshelves"  to help keep a running list of books to develop our reading identities, and build independence as readers. Students also learned the importance of book recommendations, and examined "Book Talk Criteria" to use in determining whether or not a book is "worthy" of a book talk. We planned our first book talk presentations and many students even got a chance to give their book talks to the class! Finally, we learned that readers talk with partners about their thinking in order to support comprehension. Students practiced jotting down ideas and sharing with a partner while using our conversation protocol.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our WEX focus for the week was on focus. Students focused on setting and sound, and also completed their first revision assignment.

SOCIAL SCIENCE:
Once again, I found myself completely amazed by the students' passion for this project! Our time was spent wrapping up research and final projects, giving peer feedback, and completing research summaries. As students began to share their presentations with the class, the level of engagement only increased! Final projects were designed creatively and effectively to truly capture the attention of the audience while teaching classmates about his or her topic... Prezis, Posters, and slideshows......I can't wait to see what this week will bring!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
We will continue moving through Unit 2 this week. Students will practice multiplication of whole and decimal numbers.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our mini-lessons will continue this week. The topics include: elements of a story, examining characters, and reviewing reading data.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our WEX time for the week will focus on using showing details.

SOCIAL SCIENCE:
The remaining American Revolution research presentations will be shared this week! We will also spend some time continuing our examination of the rising tensions in the colonies, along with the "Shot Heard 'Round the World." In addition, our beloved read aloud of My Brother Sam is Dead will begin. Please look for a parent letter that will be sent home this week.

We are moving right along in fifth grade! Our class continues to work hard, and enjoys learning new concepts together! These last few weeks have truly been a pleasure!

Here's What Happened Last Week:
MATH:
In math last week we finished up Unit 1, Number Concepts. Students learned how to find the prime factorization of numbers and examined exponential notation. We reviewed the major concepts from the unit and documented our study habits in preparation for last Friday's test. We will spend time today reflected on our progress.

READING WORKSHOP:
Literacy last week focused on the power of conversation. Students learned that readers come together to have conversations in order to both share thinking and grow ideas together. We developed and implemented a protocol to follow during our conversations, and learned how to use a repertoire of strategies to begin conversations. In addition, students used different conversational moves, like asking questions and using textual evidence, to develop, support, and defend an idea about a text.

This week's texts:
My Life in Dog Years (A class favorite!)
A Day's Work

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our WEX focus last week was on focus! Students practiced focusing on a moment and focusing on perspective.

SOCIAL SCIENCE:

Our exciting exploration of self-selected American Revolution topics continued last week! Once again we spent our time researching topics, asking questions and documenting findings via note-taking, reflecting on progress, and eliciting peer feedback.

I have to say, I found myself mesmerized many times throughout the week. Their excitement for learning was contagious! At times the classroom was utterly silent, with fifth graders completely engaged in their research...the only sounds to be heard were keyboards tapping and book pages turning. At other times students were literally running up to one another to share an interesting fact, show an important picture, or even lend a helping hand.

Many students are already creating their final presentations to be shared with the class near the end of the week! I can't stress enough how amazed I have been with the excitement for learning during our social science time! We are all eagerly awaiting final presentations this week!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
In math this week, we will begin Unit 2: Estimation and Computation. Students will review addition and subtraction of whole and decimals numbers. We will also conduct two exciting experiments to collect data.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our Launching Unit Mini-Lessons will begin this week! Students will be busy studying themselves as readers, participating in book and partner talks, and examining the elements of a story.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We will continue to practice the skill of focus this week in WEX. Students will focus on objects, settings, and sound.

SOCIAL SCIENCE:
Our American Revolution exploration will continue this week as we finalize our research and notes. Students will prepare and present final presentations!

Welcome to the first official issue of  5-1’s weekly Class News! Our year is off to a wonderful start, and I am truly enjoying getting to know our class! I just love our classroom community already, and can't wait to share an exciting year together!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
In math last week we continued moving through our first math unit, Number Concepts. Students examined the rules for divisibility and classified numbers as prime or composite. We also learned how to "square" and "unsquare" numbers.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our reading workshop is up and running in our classroom! Last week we completed our first three Interactive Read-Aloud Lessons with much success! Students examined the components of a Reading Workshop and considered their own reading identities. We also reflected on our individual strengths, challenges, and interests as readers. Our class really enjoyed each of our read aloud texts as well:
The Hard Times Jar
Old Henry
When Jessie Came Across the Sea

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We officially began our first WEX unit on Personal Narratives. Students reviewed the WEX Writer's Mindset, Rules for Writing Time, and Rules for Sharing. We practiced focusing on one moment and even participated in a super fun brainstorming activity!

SOCIAL SCIENCE:
During the first week of school, students learned about the importance of taverns during this political time in our history. We elected tavern group leaders for our entire American Revolution study. The following students were chosen among their peers as leaders: Sammie, Xander, Clare, and Jordan. Congratulations to our great leaders!!!

Last week our study of the American Revolution officially began! The students and I are super excited to take a "different" route of exploration this year...one that involves them in the "driver's seat" and me alongside as a passenger. Picture yourself teaching your child to drive in say...5(ish) years...he or she will be in the seat as you guide him or her to become a successful driver. This is my goal for our unit!

Together, as a class, we discussed our prior knowledge of the American Revolution and then developed essential questions to guide our understanding of what actually took place before, during, and after the American Revolution. Students were eager to be in charge of their learning and plan their course of travel...they developed their own questions and began to research their answers (using a multitude of resources) to eventually be shared (in any capacity) with the rest of the class. We stopped along the way to document our learning, reflect on our progress, and we will (beginning next week) of course give peer feedback to one another.

Tavern groups will serve as true meetinghouses for our learners to share their findings, elicit feedback, and make decisions about their learning. I can't wait to see where this adventure takes your children and me, and I will most definitely fill you in on all of our happenings every step of the way!!!
