Welcome to the first official issue of 5-1’s weekly Class News! Our year is off to a wonderful start, and I am truly enjoying getting to know our class! I just love our classroom community already, and can't wait to share an exciting year together!
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
In math last week we continued moving through our first math unit, Number Concepts. Students examined the rules for divisibility and classified numbers as prime or composite. We also learned how to "square" and "unsquare" numbers.
READING WORKSHOP:
Our reading workshop is up and running in our classroom! Last week we completed our first three Interactive Read-Aloud Lessons with much success! Students examined the components of a Reading Workshop and considered their own reading identities. We also reflected on our individual strengths, challenges, and interests as readers. Our class really enjoyed each of our read aloud texts as well:
The Hard Times Jar
Old Henry
When Jessie Came Across the Sea
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We officially began our first WEX unit on Personal Narratives. Students reviewed the WEX Writer's Mindset, Rules for Writing Time, and Rules for Sharing. We practiced focusing on one moment and even participated in a super fun brainstorming activity!
SOCIAL SCIENCE:
During the first week of school, students learned about the importance of taverns during this political time in our history. We elected tavern group leaders for our entire American Revolution study. The following students were chosen among their peers as leaders: Sammie, Xander, Clare, and Jordan. Congratulations to our great leaders!!!
Last week our study of the American Revolution officially began! The students and I are super excited to take a "different" route of exploration this year...one that involves them in the "driver's seat" and me alongside as a passenger. Picture yourself teaching your child to drive in say...5(ish) years...he or she will be in the seat as you guide him or her to become a successful driver. This is my goal for our unit!
Together, as a class, we discussed our prior knowledge of the American Revolution and then developed essential questions to guide our understanding of what actually took place before, during, and after the American Revolution. Students were eager to be in charge of their learning and plan their course of travel...they developed their own questions and began to research their answers (using a multitude of resources) to eventually be shared (in any capacity) with the rest of the class. We stopped along the way to document our learning, reflect on our progress, and we will (beginning next week) of course give peer feedback to one another.
Tavern groups will serve as true meetinghouses for our learners to share their findings, elicit feedback, and make decisions about their learning. I can't wait to see where this adventure takes your children and me, and I will most definitely fill you in on all of our happenings every step of the way!!!
