Happy last week of February! The weeks are just flying by! As a reminder, please send in headphones for your child if you haven't already done so. :)

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
Last week in math we began Unit 7, Exponents and Negative Numbers. Students examined exponential notation, standard notation, and expanded notation. We also practiced using the powers of 10, along with scientific notation.

READING WORKSHOP:
Last week during literacy we began our novel study of Holes. Students were instantly intrigued by the characters in this book and excitement grew throughout the week! We will focus on many different aspects of "good reading" with this novel, which will ultimately prepare students for a successful experience in conducting literature circles. We used our time last week to review reading strategies and the Notice & Note signposts. Students practiced questioning (we developed three essential questions to drive our study of Holes), which included responded to and creating different levels of questions. Through several "Think Alouds" students practiced taking notes and finding evidence (even this early on) to answer our essential questions. Finally, we logged the signposts that we discovered and determined how they help us understand the characters and theme.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:

Our Writers’ Workshop time was spent on our new writing project, The Harris Burdick Mysteries. Students selected a mystery picture and caption (based on The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris VanAllsburg) and practiced observing and inferring as they developed a hypothesis for their mystery. We then began composing our mystery stories; focusing on character, setting, and plot development.

SCIENCE:
Earth in Space continued last week as students explored our sun as a star! Students were introduced to the idea that the apparent brightness of the sun and stars is due to their relative distance from Earth. We also enjoyed reading about many different types of stars.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
This week in math we will continue moving through Unit 7. Students will practice using parentheses and the order of operations. We will also compare and order numbers.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our novel study of Holes will continue this week with a focus on social interactions and preparing for discussions.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We will continue drafting our Harris Burdick Mysteries.

SCIENCE:
Our study of Earth in Space will conclude this week. Students will learn about seeing stars from Earth, along with star patterns.
