Happy February! We're ready for another busy week in fifth grade! A special THANK YOU to Mrs. Ernst for coming into our class last week to teach us about adaptations for disabled students!
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
Last week in math we began Unit 6: Using Data and Adding/Subtracting Fractions. Students learned how to create line plots and stem-and-leaf plots for data sets. We used our graphs to find the landmarks for each data set, and analyzed and drew conclusions about the results.
READING WORKSHOP:
Our literacy time last week focused on the nonfiction text, Freedom Walkers. Throughout the week, students examined new vocabulary terms and practiced using various comprehension strategies to better understand this complex text. As we explored this story behind the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, students learned about the lives of Jo Ann Robinson and Claudette Colvin. We practiced visualizing as we compared life in the 1950s to life today. Students also examined photographs and captions to further understand how the author retells this story throughout the book.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Response to Fiction continued last week. Students wrote about what dialogue and narration show, and practiced telling and showing with direct quotes. We also identified textual evidence that shows character traits, and made connections between two moments based on traits.
SCIENCE:
Our Earth in Space unit continued last week as week explored patterns of the sun. Students explained the concept of day and night through an examination of rotation and revolution. We also used observations to explain how a shadow's shape, direction, and movement are related to the sun's position and to the path it travels across the sky.
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
Most of our math time this week will be spent taking our COgat tests. However, we will squeeze in a lesson or two on adding fractions with different denominators.
READING WORKSHOP:
Our study of Freedom Walkers will continue this week. Students will examine the lives of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the many other boycott heroes.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We will complete our final Response to Fiction lessons before beginning our formal essay. This week students will learn the rules for verb tense and will practice adding evidence by quoting dialogue from the text.
SCIENCE:
Earth in Space will continue this week! Students will focus on observing the sun and tracking shadows.
