Happy March, Everyone!! We're definitely feeling a little spring fever in 5th grade, and these next two weeks, I know, are going to fly by!
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK💡
MATH:
Last week in math we began Chapter 9: Multiplying and Dividing Decimals. Students practiced multiplying whole numbers by decimals, and decimals by 10s, 100s, and 1000s. Students also learned how to divide decimals by whole numbers and round quotients to the nearest tenth and hundredth places.
READING WORKSHOP:
Much of our reading time last week was spent taking our Illinois Science Assessments. We were, however, able to squeeze in a couple of days of our Freedom Walkers book study. Students examined the influence of Martin Luther King, Jr. on the Montgomery Bus Boycott. We also learned about the many boycott heroes and why they were proud to be arrested. Our nonfiction comprehension strategies included determining importance and asking/answering questions.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our Opinion Writing unit continued last week. Students formally selected persuasive writing topics, and began drafting their essays. As we moved through the writing process and examined the structure of persuasive writing, students focused on developing their introductory paragraphs and body paragraphs. We also learned how to incorporate transitional words and phrases.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
In social studies last week we began our study on The Constitution and Branches of Government. Students kicked off the unit with an examination of the Articles of Confederation and the Constitutional Convention.
