Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Due to last week's absence, this week's Class News update will only contain highlights for the week ahead. Look for a regular edition of our Class News next week! 💗

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS📌
MATH:
We will begin Chapter 4: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers. This week, students will practice multiplying proper fractions and solving real world problems.

READING WORKSHOP:

Our reading focus for the next three weeks will shift to Notice & Note: Nonfiction. This unit begins with creating the questioning stance. Students will be asked to read with the following questions in mind:
What surprised me?
What did the author think I already knew?
What changed, challenged, or confirmed what I already knew?
"Reading with these Big Questions in mind encourages a critical, attentive stance and develops habits of mind that-if we can instill them in our students-may help them deal more attentively and intelligently with the nonfiction texts they will encounter throughout their lives."

WRITERS' WORKSHOP::
This week we will finish up our Personal Narrative unit. Students will spend time proofreading, conferring, and publishing. We will also hold our second Gallery Walk on Friday!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK 💡
MATH:
Last week in math we wrapped up Chapter 3. Students practiced adding and subtracting mixed numbers, and solved real world fraction problems. We also reviewed the major concepts from the chapter on Thursday and took our final assessment on Friday.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our readers were super busy last week continuing our study of fiction. Students compared the structures of fiction texts and analyzed the story elements found in historical fiction. Additionally, we also examined the different types of characters found in fiction.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Last week our writers continued to explore personal narratives. We examined examples of narratives that focused on valuable lessons learned in life, and practiced incorporating sensory details into our own narratives to engage  readers. On Friday, students selected a personal narrative draft to bring through the publication process next week!

SOCIAL STUDIES:
The 1760/1770s have arrived at Patton School! Last week we examined some of the rising tension in colonies that led to the American Revolution. Our class learned about the French and Indian War, The Proclamation of 1763, and The Quartering Act. Students were given their first bank of Shillings on Friday...which came with a laundry list of Queen Anderle's Royal Taxes! This is such a super fun time of year in fifth grade and we're excited for this week's adventures!!

The days are just flying by in fifth grade! It's hard to believe that the first trimester already comes to a close this Friday! I love watching our classroom community grow stronger with each new week, and I'm excited for the months ahead! 💗

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK 💡
MATH:
Sadly, much of our math time last week was spent CoGAT Testing. We were, however, able to squeeze in some fraction practice on the days we were together. Students learned how to express fractions as division expressions, mixed numbers, and decimals. We also learned how to add mixed numbers.

READING WORKSHOP:
We spent last week in reading focusing on determining the theme in a fiction text. As a class we examined common themes in fiction and created a lengthy list of possibilities for Because of Mr. Terupt. Students went on to create a constructed response identifying the theme, using at least three specific pieces of evidence to support their claim. Finally, our class compared the structures and themes of Because of Mr. Terupt and Towers Falling, once again using specific evidence from the text to support our claim.s.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our writers were super busy last week continuing to explore personal narrative writing. Students practiced incorporating sensory details into their work to engage their readers.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

We kicked off our exciting American Revolution unit last week!, Students learned about the importance of taverns as social agents of change during the 1770s. We formed our own classroom tavern groups and students designed tavern signs with their fellow tavern members!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS 📌

We will wrap up Chapter 3 in math this week. Students will practice adding and subtracting mixed numbers, and solve real world fraction problems. Our final test will be on Friday, November 12th.
