HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK 💡
MATH:
Last week in math we wrapped up Chapter 3. Students practiced adding and subtracting mixed numbers, and solved real world fraction problems. We also reviewed the major concepts from the chapter on Thursday and took our final assessment on Friday.
READING WORKSHOP:
Our readers were super busy last week continuing our study of fiction. Students compared the structures of fiction texts and analyzed the story elements found in historical fiction. Additionally, we also examined the different types of characters found in fiction.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Last week our writers continued to explore personal narratives. We examined examples of narratives that focused on valuable lessons learned in life, and practiced incorporating sensory details into our own narratives to engage readers. On Friday, students selected a personal narrative draft to bring through the publication process next week!
SOCIAL STUDIES:
The 1760/1770s have arrived at Patton School! Last week we examined some of the rising tension in colonies that led to the American Revolution. Our class learned about the French and Indian War, The Proclamation of 1763, and The Quartering Act. Students were given their first bank of Shillings on Friday...which came with a laundry list of Queen Anderle's Royal Taxes! This is such a super fun time of year in fifth grade and we're excited for this week's adventures!!
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS 📌
MATH:
Our week will begin with Chapter 3 test corrections and our Chapter 4 (Multiplying and Dividing Fractions) Opener. Additionally, fifth grade math teachers will be introducing our new Building Fact Fluency math supplement, Building Fact Fluency: A Toolkit for Multiplication & Division. We will begin integrating the lessons and games of this research-based toolkit to help students continue to develop a deep, conceptual understanding of math operations and fact fluency..
READING WORKSHOP:
We will wrap up our Fiction unit this week with our final lessons focusing on examining conflict.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Students will begin taking their personal narrative through the publication process. This week our writers will revise for sensory details, feelings, thoughts, and lessons. Additionally, students will revise their opening and closing sentences.
