The days are just flying by in fifth grade! It's hard to believe that the first trimester already comes to a close this Friday! I love watching our classroom community grow stronger with each new week, and I'm excited for the months ahead! 💗
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK 💡
MATH:
Sadly, much of our math time last week was spent CoGAT Testing. We were, however, able to squeeze in some fraction practice on the days we were together. Students learned how to express fractions as division expressions, mixed numbers, and decimals. We also learned how to add mixed numbers.
READING WORKSHOP:
We spent last week in reading focusing on determining the theme in a fiction text. As a class we examined common themes in fiction and created a lengthy list of possibilities for Because of Mr. Terupt. Students went on to create a constructed response identifying the theme, using at least three specific pieces of evidence to support their claim. Finally, our class compared the structures and themes of Because of Mr. Terupt and Towers Falling, once again using specific evidence from the text to support our claim.s.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our writers were super busy last week continuing to explore personal narrative writing. Students practiced incorporating sensory details into their work to engage their readers.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We kicked off our exciting American Revolution unit last week!, Students learned about the importance of taverns as social agents of change during the 1770s. We formed our own classroom tavern groups and students designed tavern signs with their fellow tavern members!
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS 📌

We will wrap up Chapter 3 in math this week. Students will practice adding and subtracting mixed numbers, and solve real world fraction problems. Our final test will be on Friday, November 12th.
