I hope you all had a wonderful Mother's Day yesterday! It’s hard to believe that we have reached the final weeks of the school year! This will (most likely) be the final installment of The Anderle’s Adventures for the 2020-2021 School Year...and what a school year it has been!! Working with your children has been such an incredible privilege. I'll save my "Mrs. Anderle Story" for another time, but you should know, although this year has been filled with ups and downs, uncertainties and unknowns; your children have been absolutely amazing!. Thank you for all you've done to support your child's journey here at Patton School! I'm looking forward to celebrating our remaining milestones together over these last few weeks! 💗 💗 💗

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK💡
MATH:
Last week in math we began Chapter 11: Graphing and Probability. Students practiced making and interpreting line plots, and used data tables to graph equations.

READING WORKSHOP:
We wrapped up our Poetry unit with a special project focusing on civil rights and Kwame Alexander's award winning poem/picture book, The Undefeated. After analyzing this incredible poem, students researched a person or event showcased in the book in order to better understand the significant impact this person (or event) has had over time.

Additionally, we began our final nonfiction book study of the year, Children of the Wild West. Students took an in depth look at the experiences shared by pioneer families as we examined frontier photographers and what life was like traveling west.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our Opinion Writing unit came to an end last week! It was so amazing to hear students share their persuasive essays on so many interesting topics...what a talented group of writers we have!

We also began a
new writing project, The Harris Burdick Mysteries., last week Students selected a mystery picture and caption (based on The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris VanAllsburg) and began composing a mystery story focusing on character, setting, and plot development.

SCIENCE:
Our study of Ecosystems and decomposition continued last week! Students
observed dung beetles and carrion beetles, and explained how scavengers feed on the matter of nature’s waste. We also drew models to show how fungi and bacteria contribute to the movement of matter in ecosystems.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS📌
MATH:
We will finish up Chapter 11 this week. Students will compare data using line graphs and review the major concepts from the unit. We will take our final assessment on Thursday.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our nonfiction study of The Children of the Wild West will continue this week.

WRITERS' WORKSOP:
Students will continue drafting and editing their Harris Burdick mysteries this week.

Additionally, we will begin a Personalized Learning Project, The 15 Day Challenge, this week! Students will explore the idea of what they would like to learn or master in 15 days. We will spend time brainstorming topics and ideas, and formulate questions to drive our learning. Students will spend the remainder of this week (days 1-5 of the challenge) researching/learning, documenting, and reflecting on their findings each day. We will also work with partners to provide peer feedback before setting goals for next week's research plan.

SCIENCE:
This week's study of Ecosystems will focus on our worms as consumers and decomposers!
