Happy May! (That seems so crazy to me!) We're busy as ever in 5th grade and we're ready to enjoy this test-free week ahead!
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK💡
MATH:
Last week in math we wrapped up Chapter 9. Students practiced solving real world decimal problems, and we reviewed the major concepts from the unit. Our class did a great job on Friday's final assessment!
READING WORKSHOP:
Our Poetry unit came to an end last week as we completed the last of our mini-lessons. Students practiced identifying and interpreting figurative language, and examined themes across poems.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We completed the last of our revision lessons for our Opinion Writing unit last week. Students revised for sentence fragments, proper usage of punctuation, and development of paragraphs. We can't wait to share our essays this week!
SCIENCE:
Our Ecosystems unit continued last week in science! Students explored the idea that matter in nature's waste is broken down by scavengers and decomposers.
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS📌
MATH:
We will begin Chapter 11, Graphs and Probability. Students will practice making and interpreting line graphs and equations.
READING WORKSHOP:
Our Poetry unit will culminate with an in-depth look at Kwame Alexander's award winning book, The Undefeated. From there, we will move into a quick, nonfiction text study focusing on the pioneers heading west.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
After our writers have an opportunity to share their persuasive essays, we will begin a brief mystery unit focusing on Chris Van Allsburg's book, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick.
SICENCE:
We're getting close to wrapping up our Ecosystems unit. This week we will continue to examine decomposition, with a special exploration of our own worms!
