First round of testing....✅ With MAP Testing behind us, we're moving on to the IAR Tests this week. Please be sure that your child has a working pair of headphones for these tests.

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK 💡
MATH:
Last week in math we continued moving through Chapter 9. Students practiced estimating decimals in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. We also spent time converting metric units.

READING WORKSHOP:
Poetry continued last week in fifth grade! We learned that readers ask questions about poems to make connections, make discoveries, and deepen their understanding. Students also learned that readers use background knowledge and content to figure out words and phrases. We unlocked unknown words to gain a sense of the overall meaning of a variety of poems.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our Opinion Writing unit continued last week. Students formally selected persuasive writing topics, and began drafting their essays. As we moved through the writing process and examined the structure of persuasive writing, students focused on developing their introductory paragraphs and body paragraphs. We also learned how to incorporate transitional words and phrases.

SCIENCE:
Students continued to study Ecosystems last week in science. First, we examined the roles of producers and consumers in a food chain and food web. Students created models to illustrate how energy and matter flow through a food chain. Next, students explored plants as producers. While focusing on the idea that In addition to sunlight, plants get what they need for growth mostly from air and water, students created infographics to represent this cycle.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS 📌
MATH:
Much of our math time this week will be dedicated to IAR Testing. We will, however, squeeze in some additional practice of converting metric units and solving decimal problems.

READING WORKSHOP:
We will also lose some of our reading workshop time this week due to IAR Testing. On the days we do have reading, we will continue to focus on our Poetry unit.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our Opinion Writing unit will continue this week as students work on their persuasive essays.

SCIENCE:
Science will be cut short this week as well, but we will spend some time examining sunlight in relation to living things.

Thankful for another great week in 5th grade! 💗 💗 💗

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK💡
MATH:
Last week in math we continued moving through Chapter 9. Students practiced dividing decimals by whole numbers, and multiplying and dividing decimals by 10s, 100s, and 1000s.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our study of poetry continued last week. Students
learned that readers use the words on a page to create images in their minds. We practiced visualizing as we listened to "Imagine a Place" by Sarah L. Thomson.  Students also determined the author's purpose, inspiration, and big ideas from two poems in "Locomotion" by Jacqueline Woodson.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Opinion writing continued last week in fifth grade! Students read and discussed persuasive essays on the topics of animal testing and school uniforms, and considered the author's audience and purpose. Our writers also continued to experiment with developing their own opinion essays.

SCIENCE:
Worms! 🐛 Our worms arrived last week and our class worked so cooperatively to set up our classroom worm composter! We can't wait for the worms to get settled so we can begin observing and interacting with this living ecosystem!

In other science news...students officially begin thinking about the key components of an ecosystem. We observed the living and non-living components of sample ecosystems and identified interactions between them. Students also discussed the definition of an ecosystem, and explored the grounds of Patton School to search for different interactions within this ecosystem. Additionally, our scientists discussed the survival needs of animals and examined the link between energy and matter, and the survival needs of living things.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS📌

MATH:
We will continue moving along in Chapter 9. Our focus this week will be on estimating decimals and converting metric units.
