First round of testing....✅ With MAP Testing behind us, we're moving on to the IAR Tests this week. Please be sure that your child has a working pair of headphones for these tests.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK 💡
MATH:
Last week in math we continued moving through Chapter 9. Students practiced estimating decimals in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. We also spent time converting metric units.
READING WORKSHOP:
Poetry continued last week in fifth grade! We learned that readers ask questions about poems to make connections, make discoveries, and deepen their understanding. Students also learned that readers use background knowledge and content to figure out words and phrases. We unlocked unknown words to gain a sense of the overall meaning of a variety of poems.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our Opinion Writing unit continued last week. Students formally selected persuasive writing topics, and began drafting their essays. As we moved through the writing process and examined the structure of persuasive writing, students focused on developing their introductory paragraphs and body paragraphs. We also learned how to incorporate transitional words and phrases.
SCIENCE:
Students continued to study Ecosystems last week in science. First, we examined the roles of producers and consumers in a food chain and food web. Students created models to illustrate how energy and matter flow through a food chain. Next, students explored plants as producers. While focusing on the idea that In addition to sunlight, plants get what they need for growth mostly from air and water, students created infographics to represent this cycle.
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS 📌
MATH:
Much of our math time this week will be dedicated to IAR Testing. We will, however, squeeze in some additional practice of converting metric units and solving decimal problems.
READING WORKSHOP:
We will also lose some of our reading workshop time this week due to IAR Testing. On the days we do have reading, we will continue to focus on our Poetry unit.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our Opinion Writing unit will continue this week as students work on their persuasive essays.
SCIENCE:
Science will be cut short this week as well, but we will spend some time examining sunlight in relation to living things.
