Wishing each of you and your families a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year! See or "see" you all in 2021!  💗

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK 📌
MATH:
Last week in math we continued moving through Chapter 3. Students examined fractions as mixed numbers, division expressions, and decimals. We also learned how to add and subtract mixed numbers.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our super readers finished up our Fiction unit last week. Mini-lesson topics included elements of drama, unlocking meaning of unfamiliar words, and theme.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Students continued exploring Personal Narrative writing last week. Students chose a narrative draft to bring through the publication process and begin working on revisions. Our writers revised for sensory details, and examined how to keep their verb tenses consistent.

SCIENCE:
Our exploration of Matter continued last week! Students loved our hands-on investigation of the properties of gases (our water, paper towel, and cup experiment)! It was so much fun to see our scientists formulating ideas and predictions, and then drawing conclusions based on their observations.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS 💡
Math:
We will finish up Chapter 3 this week. Students will practice subtracting mixed numbers. solve real world fraction and mixed number problems, and take a final quiz on Thursday.

READING WORKSHOP:
We will complete one final theme activity on Monday, and then students will take a short fiction assessment on Tuesday. We will spend the rest of the week focusing on  applying comprehension strategies with our read aloud text, Ghost.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our writers this week will continue to focus on revising their drafts. We will revise for thoughts, feelings, and lessons; along with opening and closing sentences. Students will also have a chance to peer confer before our winter break begins!

SCIENCE:
Our super fun Matter unit will come to an end this week with our final lessons on heating and cooling matter, mixtures, and chemical reactions.
**Please note, students will be given an OPTIONAL science experiment (creating OOBLECK) to complete over winter break. This activity will be posted in seesaw, and explained, later in the week.

Another busy and exciting week passed us by, and we're gearing up for the final weeks of 2020...(I'm just going to leave it at that...the final weeks of 2020 🙃 ).
Your kids continue to amaze me with their patience and perseverance! We had a pretty rough week, technology wise, but their smiles, laughter, and HELP truly made every ounce of my frustration melt away. 💗

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK📌
MATH:
Last week in math we began Chapter 3: Fractions and Mixed Numbers. Students spent time learning strategies for finding least common multiples and greatest common factors, and applied these skills to simplifying fractions and determining the lowest common denominator. Additionally, students learned how to add and subtract unlike fractions.

READING WORKSHOP:
This week our readers continued moving through our Fiction unit. Students learned that characters come in all shapes and sizes, as we evaluated types of characters in fiction. We also spent time examining conflict, and analyzed plot structure using a plot diagram.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Last week our writers continued to explore personal narratives. They examined examples of narratives that focused on valuable lessons learned in life, and practiced incorporating sensory details into their own narratives to engage  readers.

SCIENCE:
We began our second science unit of the year, Matter! Our focus for the week was on defining and classifying matter. Students examined how matter can be identified based on its properties and sorted into "states of matter." Additionally, students determined the properties that make something a solid, liquid, or gas.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS💡
MATH:
We will continue moving through Chapter 3. Students will examine fractions as decimals, and learn how to add and subtract mixed numbers.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our Fiction unit will come to an end this week. Our final mini-lessons will include elements of drama, dealing with difficulty in understanding vocabulary and texts, uncovering themes, and comparing themes across texts.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
This week our writers will continue to explore lessons learned from others. Students will also begin the publication process for a self-selected personal narrative draft.

SCIENCE:
Our Matter unit will continue this week as students explore properties of gases, and heating and cooling matter.
