The days are seriously flying by in fifth grade. As I turn the page in my planbook to this week, I can't help but pause as I look at Friday, March 12th....so many emotions as we approach the one year mark.😔. One thing is certain, though...I am so thankful that I will not have to say goodbye to our class any time soon...they are stuck with me for the next few months!! 😉
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK💡
MATH:
Last week in math we wrapped up Chapter 6. Students learned how to find the area of a triangle, and practiced solving multi-step area problems. We reviewed the major concepts from the chapter on Thursday and took a short assessment on Friday.
READING WORKSHOP:
Our literacy time last week focused on the nonfiction text, Freedom Walkers. Throughout the week, students examined new vocabulary terms and practiced using various comprehension strategies to better understand this complex text. As we explored this story behind the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, students learned about the lives of Jo Ann Robinson and Claudette Colvin. We practiced visualizing as we compared life in the 1950s to life today. Students also examined photographs and captions to further understand how the author retells this story throughout the book.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Being a Writer last week focused on revising our fiction drafts! Students learned how to revise closing sentences, and how to revise to develop their setting. We also examined how to vary our sentences using prepositional phrases.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Last week in social studies students explored several different types of governments. We took an in depth look at the characteristics and functions of what a democracy, anarchy, oligarchy, theocracy, monarchy, and dictatorship look like for its citizens, and how each type of government differs from one another.
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS📌
