It’s hard to believe that conferences are this week and Thanksgiving is next week! I am looking forward to meeting with each of you, and I hope you all enjoy a wonderful holiday with your families!
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK💡
MATH:
Last week in math we continued moving through Chapter 2. Students practiced using the order of operations to simplify numeric expressions that included parentheses, brackets, and braces. We also began solving real world multiplication and division multi-step problems.
READING WORKSHOP:
After completing one last mini-lesson on finding the main idea of nonfiction texts, we kicked off our fiction unit with three of my favorite stories from the book "Birthday Surprises." First, students practiced determining fiction story elements as we read, "Don't Be an Uncle Max." Next, we analyzed character development while reading a powerful text about friendships, "Promises." Finally, students explored point of view as we examined the heartwarming story, "Hattie's Birthday Box." In addition, our fifth graders were super lucky to spend their reading time on Thursday with famed author, Dan Geimenhart!
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our third writing unit of the year, Personal Narratives, has gotten off to a great start! Throughout the week, students explored the characteristics of personal narratives and identified writing ideas based on special objects, interesting events, and sensory details.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Last week in social studies, students began examining our next chapter: Slavery in the Americas. As a class, we explored what life was like in South Africa and the European Slave Trade. We also held so many wonderful discussions focusing on the hardships faced by Africans and the impact of slavery on the lives of so many people.

This week in math we will finish up Chapter 2. We will have a quiz over order of operations and story problems on Wednesday, November 18th.
READING WORKSHOP:
Our mini-lessons this week will focus on elements of historical fiction, understanding a modern day fairy tale, and identifying theme.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
This week our writers will focus on using sensory details in their personal narrative writing.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Our study of slavery will continue this week as we examine slave trades, triangular trade, and surviving the Middle Passage.
