Another busy week passed us by in fifth grade! Thank you for all of your support in getting your child caught up in Seesaw....things are looking great in our virtual learning space! As our final days of remote-only come to a close this week, I know you probably have many unanswered questions about the days and weeks ahead. I probably don't have all of the answers, however; I can promise you that I will do everything I possibly can to make this transition as smooth as possible for everyone. I think communication and flexibility will continue to be our leading factors in achieving ultimate success. Please continue to reach out, at any time, with any questions and/or concerns you have. I am always happy to talk with you!
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK 💡
MATH:
In math last week, we began Chapter 2: Whole Number Multiplication and Division. Students practiced using patterns to multiply by 10s, 100s, and 1000s. We also reviewed rounding and estimating products.
READING WORKSHOP:
We officially put together the structure for our Reading Workshop last week! Students examined the roles of the teacher and students during our workshop time, and practiced stopping and jotting as we read and discussed our mentor texts. We also spent time examining our reading identities and learned about one another's reading habits during partner interviews. In addition, students considered ideas for filling their reading baskets, and practiced using various strategies to make sure they're understanding what they're reading.
WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
Our Being a Writer lessons last week focused on getting ideas from nonfiction. Students explored nonfiction text and non-book examples of writing throughout the week. We practiced writing question and answer books, and explored techniques for creating non-story writing pieces such as advertisements, brochures, flyers, and instructions.
SCIENCE:
We continued moving along in our Earth in Space unit as we shifted our focus from seasons to stars! Students learned that different stars range in size, brightness, and distance from Earth. We also examined the notion that stars appear to travel through the sky in a predictable daily pattern, caused by the rotation of earth.
THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS📌
