Happy last week of February! The weeks are just flying by! As a reminder, please send in headphones for your child if you haven't already done so. :)

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
Last week in math we began Unit 7, Exponents and Negative Numbers. Students examined exponential notation, standard notation, and expanded notation. We also practiced using the powers of 10, along with scientific notation.

READING WORKSHOP:
Last week during literacy we began our novel study of Holes. Students were instantly intrigued by the characters in this book and excitement grew throughout the week! We will focus on many different aspects of "good reading" with this novel, which will ultimately prepare students for a successful experience in conducting literature circles. We used our time last week to review reading strategies and the Notice & Note signposts. Students practiced questioning (we developed three essential questions to drive our study of Holes), which included responded to and creating different levels of questions. Through several "Think Alouds" students practiced taking notes and finding evidence (even this early on) to answer our essential questions. Finally, we logged the signposts that we discovered and determined how they help us understand the characters and theme.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:

Our Writers’ Workshop time was spent on our new writing project, The Harris Burdick Mysteries. Students selected a mystery picture and caption (based on The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris VanAllsburg) and practiced observing and inferring as they developed a hypothesis for their mystery. We then began composing our mystery stories; focusing on character, setting, and plot development.

SCIENCE:
Earth in Space continued last week as students explored our sun as a star! Students were introduced to the idea that the apparent brightness of the sun and stars is due to their relative distance from Earth. We also enjoyed reading about many different types of stars.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
This week in math we will continue moving through Unit 7. Students will practice using parentheses and the order of operations. We will also compare and order numbers.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our novel study of Holes will continue this week with a focus on social interactions and preparing for discussions.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP:
We will continue drafting our Harris Burdick Mysteries.

Happy Monday! We had a great week back and are ready for a busy second half of the school year!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
In math last week we began our Hands-On Equations algebra program. Students were super excited about learning “legal” moves each day. So far we have been introduced to our blue pawn (x) and number cubes. Students learned how to keep our scale balanced, and remove equal amounts of pawns from both sides of an equation. They were also taught to subract the smaller number value from the larger number value, leaving number cubes on only one side of the equation.

READING:
Our whole class novel study/response to literature unit on The Liberation of Gabriel King also began last week! Students are extremely enthusiastic about the story of Gabriel King and his best friend Frita Wilson. Already we’ve had many mature and higher-level discussions as we’ve explored the ideas of liberation, integration, and justification. Students examined point of view, idioms, and character perspectives. We even researched the Bicentennial to provide background knowledge on the setting of the story.

15 DAY CHALLENGE:
It was quite an exciting week as we began to share projects with the class! It is truly amazing to witness the excitement, creativity, and passion for this 15 Day Challenge! Last week we learned how to make dream catchers, and were taught both French and Polish. We also got to see 15 different cities located throughout the world, along with countries beginning with every letter of the alphabet from A-Z! We learned how much work it takes to create a comic strip, and the challenge involved in making duct tape art products. Even the arts were represented in our challenge....we saw a website created to display a student's amazing photography talents, and we also learned how to use different art styles to draw faces! What a week!

SCIENCE:
Human Body in Motion continued as our special LMC project began. Students worked with Mrs. Melamed and Ms. Mak to discover physical limitations some students might face as a result from a disease or disorder that require adaptations to make their learning environments more successful. We're all very excited to explore this topic more in depth, and design our own solutions!

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
We will continue moving along in our Hands-On Equations algebra unit. Students will learn several new "legal moves" this week.

READING:
Our "Gabe King" novel study will continue this week. We will focus on elements of a story, character analysis, literary elements, and point of view.

15 DAY CHALLENGE:
We will finish sharing the remaining projects and then begin our second WEX unit of the year, Response to Fiction.

Wishing each of you and your families a wonderful holiday season. Have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderfully Happy New Year!!!! See you all in 2017!!!!!

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK:
MATH:
In math last week we continued moving through Unit 5. Students practiced writing fractions as decimals. We also learned how to convert fractions into percents, and students created bar and circle graphs.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our study of nonfiction signposts continued last week, as we examined Contrasts and Contradictions, Extreme or Absolute Language, and Number and Stats.

Contrasts and Contradictions:
When the author shows you how things/people/ideas contrast or contradict one another, or shows you something that contrasts or contradicts what you already know, you need to stop and ask yourself...What does this make me wonder about (or why does this matter)? We learned that the answer will help us see details that show the main idea, compare and contrast, understand author's purpose, infer, make a generalization, notice cause and effect. Students also learned that phrases such as on the other hand, by contrast, however, and another viewpoint provide direct signals of a contrast.

Extreme or Absolute Language:

Extreme or Absolute Language makes an exaggerated, overblown, and probably untrue claim. It admits of no exceptions, and it seems to forbid doubt or questions. When readers spot this language, they will be alerted either to the strength of the author's feelings or to the possibility that the writer is exaggerating and may even be deceiving or misleading the reader.
In class, students learned that when you're reading and you notice the author uses language that leaves no doubt, exaggerates, or pushes to the limit, we should stop and ask ourselves, "Why did the author say it like that?" We learned that the answers will tell us something about the author's point of view or purpose. The author might even be exaggerating to make us think a certain way.

Numbers & Stats:

Authors use numbers and statistics to provide precision-or to avoid it. This signpost helps students make comparisons, draw conclusions, make inferences or generalizations, differentiate fact and opinion, identify details, recognize evidence, and understand the author's purpose or bias.
Students learned that when you're reading and you notice specific numbers, number words, or amounts, you should stop and ask yourself, "Why did the author use these numbers or amounts?"

PERSONALIZED LEARNING:
We continued using our WEX time last week to work on our 15 Day Challenge Personalized Learning projects. Students continued to move through the research process and document their findings. We also reflected on individual progress and gave feedback to peers as well!

SCIENCE:

Our study of the Human Body in Motion continued last week as we studied how the nervous, muscular, and circulatory systems support movement. First, students discovered that our bodies have a built-in protective mechanism (reflexes), and examined two reflexes involving the eyes-how the pupils change to limit the amount of light that enters them, and how to blink to protect them from harmful substances. We then compared these involuntary responses to the voluntary movements from our experiment last week, to discover that the nervous system is responsible for both kinds of motion in the body! Next, students experienced the effects of muscle fatigue as they performed repetitive exercises with their hands. Finally, during our last experiment, we learned to take our pulse and discovered that our heart rate increases as exercise intensity increases. Students then related this finding to the increased needs of muscle cells during exercise, realizing that the heart beats faster to deliver more raw materials to active muscles and to remove their waste.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
MATH:
We will finish up Unit 5, with our final test on Wednesday.

READING WORKSHOP:
Our nonfiction Notice & Note study will come to an end this week. Students will examine the following signposts and strategies:
Quoted Words, Word Gaps
Possible Sentences, Somebody Wanted But So, Poster.

PERSONALIZED LEARNING:
We will continue working on our Personalized Learning Projects. Hopefully our research will be completed by the end of the week!

SCIENCE:
Our study of the Human Body in Motion will come to an end this week, as we examine the respiratory and digestive systems.
